Traditional Beehives – These types of hives for the bees are provided in a straightforward manner, it is just merely an enclosure for the bees without internal structure whatsoever. The bees will start constructing with themselves in the space provided for them their comb. In this fixture, removing the comb means destroying it because it is attached in a fixed-frame manner to the enclosure. Harvesting can be done by destroying the hive, whereas in the modern beehive, removable structures and frames are provided for easy harvesting. In some traditional innovations, baskets are placed on top of the hive for the bees to fill it with honey, and eventually being replaced by boxes of different sizes. In harvesting by traditional means, hives were extracted by crushing and compressing the honeycomb, but this kind of method produces more beeswax than honey.

Top Bar Hive History

The Top bar hive purpose is mainly easy of use, low cost, no heavy lifting, for better ventilation and control over unwanted visitors of the beehive, namely the pests and other insects such as ants and hive beetles who want to take part in the honey the bees produce, as well as other predators such as skunks and bears and of course for producing honey and other bee products. An open bottom should be favored, for they will keep varroa mite ejection thus keeping the hive more hygienic and well ventilated for the bees. A sunny location and a well ventilated Top bar hive can prevent Nosema apis, a spore forming parasite that attacks the bees’ intestines and could cause dysentery among them.

Harvesting Honey from Top bar Hives

Top bar hives use a hanging bar that contains honey filled combs. These bars usually hang without ceiling or floors that support them, which gives ample ventilation to the bees and the structure permits easy access to the beekeepers, who will inspect the honeycomb for possible infection among the bees. This kind of method is the most common, as it is widely used, and it is also the cheapest and most practical way of producing honey from the bees.
